Single Dad Abruptly Abandoned By Mother Of Baby Discovers Power Of Vulnerability

By | children, dad, fathers, Food for thought, heartwarming, Motivation, single, stories, support, uplifting news, vulnerability

Just a month after baby Persephone was born, her mother left her with the baby’s dad. But through hard work and willingness to ask for help, the single dad managed to take care of his daughter just fine.

Thrust into being a single dad

Back in 2015, Richard Johnson was blessed with a baby daughter, Persephone. But just a month after she was born, the baby’s mother abandoned her family.

Unprepared and unsure of what to do, Johnson gobbled up every book and YouTube video he could find. He also turned to a Facebook group called Life of Dad that was a “major confidence booster” and helped him get through this challenging period.

One day, Johnson wrote a Facebook post about his situation and to thank the group for helping him get through. Then, the post went viral.

In the caption, Johnson explained that he doesn’t know why Persephone’s mother left — he expects postpartum depression played a role. But either way, he needed help, and the support from the Facebook group helped him get through.

It takes a village

Johnson received so much support (the post has 95,000 reactions) that he decided to start his own page chronicling life as a single dad.

Johnson documented how Persephone had holes in her heart and needed surgery. Again, he turned to his community on Facebook for support.

Incredibly, Persephone’s surgery was successful, even baffling the surgeon. “The doctor was amazed and had said, ‘I’m amazed but I don’t understand how this is quite possible. I had a few colleagues take a look and they agree had they not known the previous issue, you’d never be able to tell there was anything wrong from the start,’” Johnson wrote on the post.

Johnson’s love life worked itself out too, as he revealed on the page that he was seeing a woman named Jennifer who cared for Persephone like a mother.

In a touching birthday post a month after her surgery, Johnson told Persephone how much his life changed now that she’s in it.

“They say the child learns for the parent, however I feel I am learning more from you than you ever could from me. I look at you and can’t just help feel like everything will work out the way it should,” he wrote. “I’m going to give you the world one day Miss Lilith. I’ll work myself to death to do it. Everything you can ever want will be yours or I’m going to die trying.”

A happy ending

Thrust into the unknown of parenthood all on his own, Johnson did the right thing — he looked for help wherever he could get it. He did his own research and was vulnerable enough to tell those that helped him how much he appreciated them. In return, the community continued to support him and undoubtedly played a role in raising Persephone — they say it takes a village to raise a child.

Hero of the Week: 15-Pound Beagle’s Loyalty Saves Young Girl from Kidnapper, Teaches Us a Universal Lesson in Bravery

By | children, Food for thought, helping others, Hero of the week, Inspiring Stories, safety

It was supposed to be an uneventful day in Pasadena, Texas. Ray, a cute-as-a-button beagle mix was out for his walk, enjoying his time out-and-about. It was supposed to be just like a million other trips around the block for the tiny pupper. Walking him was one his many human buds, an 11-year-old girl, part of his extended human family. Ray, as always, was enjoying himself.

But things took a dark turn for the beagle. And even darker, and more dangerous, for his walker. For her own protection, authorities have not released her name, but Ray’s sixth-grade walker came close to a nightmare. In fact, the 11-year-old’s life has already changed, faced with the darkest sides of humanity.

Because this regular walk in the neighborhood turned out to be anything but ordinary. As the 11-year-old’s sister Bianca Hernandez told media outlets, the young girl noticed a man “looking at her strangely.” That in itself was disconcerting enough, but the suspect then followed through with his dark looks.

The man actually got out of his car and grabbed her. The young girl resisted to the best of her efforts, but this was an adult man preying on a child. She was loosing the battle. But Ray was not going to stand by and let someone hurt his friend. He may weigh only 15 pounds, but the 2-year-old pup bravely jumped in with all he had, and bit the attacker.

The young girl’s uncle and her sister, Bianca Hernandez

As the victims’s sister Bianca told local outlets, the pup quickly realized something was not right. “The dog was like, ‘Uh-uh, this is not a regular person greeting her’, so yeah, he went for a bite in the leg, and that was the only way for her to free herself,” Bianca Hernandez disclosed.

And Ray’s quick reaction and loyalty allowed the young girl to free herself from the attacker’s grip and run home, miraculously unhurt. Ray too, got away unhurt. When the young girl’s family realized what had happened, they quickly took action. Uncle Alan Aguilar chased after the suspect on foot, but the attacker got back in his car and got away.

For now. As it turns out, the terrifying incident took place within the Willow Oaks Townhomes, a housing complex equipped with surveillance cameras. And the eye in the sky got a clear picture of both the suspect’s face and license plate, giving police a major advantage in investigating the case.

Meanwhile, the young survivor is home safely with her family, and Ray, the 15-pound protector, is being hailed as a hero online for rescuing her from kidnapping.  At home, Ray is probably enjoying more belly rubs and puppy treats than he knows what to do with — as any brave pup should.

While authorities continue to investigate the harrowing incident, information remains scarce. One thing remains certain: Ray’s loyalty was crucial to the young girl’s escape, and we can only hope he chomped down on the attacker with all his 15-pound might.

This Simple 2-Question Test Will Change How You Behave Online

We’re living in an age where the online world is often more powerful and immersive than the real world.

We log on to work, bank, shop, amuse ourselves, and connect with people from around the globe. But the internet is also an unpredictable place where anonymity is taken advantage of and a sense of accountability is scarce. There are trolls, bullies, misleading posts, and humiliating videos that can be damaging in more ways than one.

This makes the internet a risky and unsafe place, particularly for children who are joining the digital world at increasingly younger ages. The dangers of the online world have become an issue we must teach new generations to deal with.

Top Youth Speaker Blake Fly gave a motivational speech to school kids where he taught them a simple two-test question to guide the way they approach life online:

  1. Is it true?
  2. Is it kind?

If what you’re about to post is not true, don’t post it. If it is true, ask yourself if it’s kind. If yes, post it.

Although this advice is directed at children, it applies to all of us so we can better manage our online image and make the digital world a safer place for newer generations. Here are a few other surprising reasons why these two questions can actually be life-changing.

1. What you do online can affect your offline goals

During his speech, Blake Fly gave the children a valuable example of how your online past can come back to haunt you.

Let’s say you once posted a hateful comment under someone’s profile picture or YouTube video. Years later, long after you’ve forgotten about even making the comment, a potential employer decides to look you up online to see who they’re dealing with.

Eventually, your name pops up and it’s a link to that image or video you commented on all those years ago. Your employer is not impressed and decides to pass on hiring or even contacting you. You may never truly realize just how many opportunities for jobs, dates, or friendships that one simple comment has made you lose.

If you know you’ve been on less-than-kind behavior on the internet in the past, search your name online and go through the pages that come up. Take the time to delete anything that could reflect badly on you, then promise yourself to do better. Self-improvement starts when you take the first step.

2. Being kind online can change your life

Knowing that the digital world is tightly linked with the real world, you’ll find that being kind online will help you improve yourself offline too.

You’ll create the chance to connect with better people, share more valuable experiences, and create a safer place for children to explore and learn. Be the person you wish everyone online could be. Lead by example and you’ll attract followers who will be inspired to do the same.

Whatever you choose to share with the world, just remember that it can either hurt or help your chances of reaching your goals in life. Pour kindness into the online world, teach the children around you to do the same, and watch how it all comes back to you tenfold.

Live your life online in a way that helps you get all those things you say you want in life. So the question becomes, ‘Who do you want to be?’

— Blake Fly

World Cup Teen Star Donates All Earnings to Charity, Shows True Meaning of Success

By | charity, children, dedication, empathy, Food for thought, Inspiring Stories, sports, success

French fans have yet to get over the high of their dominating 4-2 World Cup victory and will probably still be celebrating for a while. After all, this is only the second World Cup win for France, coming on the 20-year anniversary of the team’s first trophy.

But beyond the success and amazing performances are the players’ personal stories. And  Kylian Mbappe’s, who, at only 19 years old, has already secured his place in sports history.

According to French media reports, Mbappe is donating all of his World Cup earning to charity – and that check might be more than half a million dollars. The teen superstar played seven games during the Russia tournament – scoring a whopping four goals in total. Mbappe earned about $22,500 per game, according to Sports Illustrated, with the winning bonus estimated at around $351,000.

But the humble player won’t be cashing one cent from his well-deserved win. Instead, the 19-year-old will donate all his earnings to Premiers de Cordée, a charity that offers sports programs to hospitalized and disabled children. And this won’t even be the first time Mbappe will have stepped up for sick kids – he has been a staunch supporter of the charity since 2017.

“Kylian, he’s a great person,” Premiers de Cordée General Manager Sebastien Ruffin told Le Parisien per USA Today. “When his schedule allows it, he intervenes for us with great pleasure. He has a very good [relationship] with children, he always finds the right [words] to encourage them. I sometimes even feel that [he] takes more pleasure to play with the kids than the kids themselves.”

As the first teenager to score in the World Cup since soccer icon Pelé, the young Mbappe is in the crosshairs of every major soccer team in the world, and his home team of AS Monaco has already turned down a $115 million purchase offer on him. But money, fancy cars and other material things seem to leave Mbappe unimpressed.

“Footballer does not rhyme with Ferrari, I have no car, it’s not a big deal,” he once said. That’s right, the most desired soccer player in the world does not own a car. In fact, his mom still drives him to and from training, and Mbappe is perfectly fine with that. “I may be ahead of my age, but in real life I am still a kid.”

World Cup Players Share Early Memories of their Love of the Game, Show Real Passion Starts in Childhood

Whether it will be fan favorites Brazil, France or Germany who take home the coveted cup on July 15 remains to be seen. But millions around the world will be watching, including many future World Cup players. After all, today’s players watched legends of the past as children too, and it inspired them to pursue big dreams and a burning passion to be the best.

World Cup players reveal the moment they fell in love with the sport

English striker Harry Kane told FIFA TV that his earliest memory is of the 2002 World Cup quarter finals, when Brazil beat England with a spectacular free-kick by Ronaldinho: “It still hurts me to this day… and since then it has always been a dream to go on and play in one.”

Colombian striker Radamel Falcao grew up watching one iconic moment over and over again: Freddy Rincon’s defining goal against Germany in 1990. Only four years old, he remembers the celebrations more, but in the years after Falcao and everyone else “grew up seeing that goal over and over again.”

For Russian goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev a defining moment was the 1994 World Cup, the only one to be held in the USA up until now. But it wasn’t the location – it was truly understanding the game for the first time. “It was an overwhelming feeling,” he told FIFA TV, remembering former Russia player Oleg Salenko’s epic five goals against Cameroon – a game the current hosts nation carried 6 to 1.

[embedded content]

Mexico’s Javier Hernandez often rushed home from school during the 1998 World Cup to see idol Ronaldo, South Korea’s Son Heungmin’s life – and fashion choices – changed drastically in 2002. After South Korea beat Spain 5 to 3 in penalty shots, “everyone was going crazy. We couldn’t believe it.”

In fact, the South Korean forward got so into the game along with pretty much everyone else that they all started wearing red shirts to honor their team. “I can’t choose one moment from that World Cup,” he told FIFA TV. “Every moment in 2002 was fantastic,”

Brazil’s Neymar remembers an epic goal from 1994 against Holland, while France’s Paul Pogba watched his country dominate Brazil 3 to 0 in 1998. Just six or seven years old at the time, Pogba recounted the celebrations that followed that win: “we all went outside and climbed over the cars. There were horns sounding and we were all happy.”

[embedded content]

For Spain’s Thiago Alcantara, 1994 World Cup struck close to home. His father played for Brazil’s national team, bringing the cup home. “I was only three and though I don’t remember the matches, I remember him coming home, the celebration, and all the family being there.” He also recalls the wild celebrations following Spain’s win over The Netherlands in 2010. When the defining goal was scored “there were fire extinguishers going off and oil and knives flying in the air. The TV ended up on the floor as well.”

Iran midfielder Alizera Jahanbakhsh recalled a premonitory moment from the 2006 World Cup, when watching with his father, he turned to him saying “This is my biggest dream – to see you one day playing, wearing that shirt at a World Cup.” And although neither of them really believed it would happen back then, for Jahanbakhsh’s father’s dream became his dream. And today that dream came true.

Chris Hemsworth Talks Work-Life Balance, Reminds Us of the Things We Should Never Lose Sight Of

By | Celebrities, children, Chris Hemsworth, family, Food for thought, Inspiring Stories, love, work-life balance

It ain’t easy being a real-life superhero, even if fan-favorite Chris Hemsworth makes it look so.

Speaking to CNBC, The Avengers: Infinity War star spoke of how difficult it still is to have proper work-life balance. Even for a star of his caliber, “half of the time it’s out of my control.” But when he does have a say over his schedule, Thor does all he can to focus on the things that really matter: his wife and children back home in Australia.

“I just try and make sure I’m at home as much as possible and with the kids as much as possible,” Hemsworth said, emphasizing the importance of spending time with loved ones.

And if he can’t be home as much as he wants to, Hemsworth tries to include his kids into his work-schedule as much as possible: “If I do have to go to work, I try and bring them with me.” For the father of three “you’ve just got to make the effort” when it comes to family.

For Hemsworth, part of that effort was moving back to Australia with his family. Now happily settled in the hippie surfer town of Byron Bay, Hemsworth says his family did not do well in Hollywood. “It’s suffocating and you stop becoming a person. You have nothing to draw from because you’re living in this world of pretend on and off screen,” he told GQ Australia.

Hemsworth also revealed the strain his career had put on his relationship with wife Elsa Pataky: “In terms of work, she’s certainly given up more than I have. She’d like me to step back and be at home with the kids more, and of course, I want that too.”

Unfortunately, work still get in the way a lot, especially as he’s thinking of his career long-term: “I’m at this crucial point in my career – I’ve just got to set up for longevity or I’ll slip off.”

But during his eight years of marriage, Hemsworth has learned more lessons than nurturing a healthy work-life balance and spending more time with the kids. “My wife and I fell in love, had kids, didn’t really see each other for a few years, then fell back in love,” he summarized the early years of his marriage to GQ Australia.

Thor may be a doting father, but he learned the importance of setting time aside just for himself and his wife: “Once you have children, every instinct and every moment of your time is consumed by that.”

But that too can put a strain on a happy homelife, so he’s since made a point of reconnecting: “Make sure you have date night even if it’s once in a blue moon.”

His selfless and joyful act of kindness was caught on camera by a passerby and soon went viral, touching hearts across the world.

Maurice, who lives in Georgia, was on his way home with his sister and mom Contricia Hill when he first noticed an elderly woman with a walker crossing a busy road by herself.

But when she was met by a flight of stairs and started struggling, Maurice immediately asked his mom if he could get out of their car and go help, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Getting the greenlight from his proud mom, Maurice hopped out of the car and patiently helped the older woman up each step. With one arm around her and the other helping lift her walker, Maurice and the older lady successfully made it up the steps, hugging at the end to celebrate the win.

Maurice’s new friend patted him on the back and told him he was special for helping out. Both of them smiling, Maurice hopped down the stairs and back into his mom’s car.

How the story went viral

But unbeknownst to Maurice and his family, a stranger saw the entire beautiful interaction and caught in camera. The bystander, Riley Duncan, was so touched by Maurice’s kindness, he shared it to a local Facebook group with the caption “God bless our youth” so others too could appreciate the moment.

Comments and shares went wild, with many praising Maurice for being a “sweet young man” and a “young gentleman.” Many raised Maurice as an example for youth and remarking what a great job his family has done to instill such selfless values in him.

“Young man, you are a treasure. Always keep your kindess and never let other people that that away from you. Five gold stars for your kindess and Five gold stars for the parents whom are doing a superb job raising this child into a decent caring person,” one commenter wrote.

More heartwarming reactions

When mom Contricia Hill learned that her son has become internet-famous for his random act of kindness she couldn’t be prouder, telling a local news channel: “It’s touching. It’s very touching. (It just shows) respect and raising your kids right goes a long way.”

As for what bystander Riley thought of the interaction? “I was so proud and it made me feel so good and I started crying,” he told WGXA, adding he recorded the moment “with tears.” In fact, Riley was so touched, he revealed to CBS News he will be rewarding Maurice with a $100 for his kindness.

When asked what motivated his drive to help, Maurice simply said: “She was struggling, so I decided to help her.”

We can all be more like Maurice.

“‘Either you work hard for it, or you don’t work hard for it,” he says.

Kevin Rupp – Keep Hope Alive

This father’s heartfelt farewell to his dying daughter will make you believe in hope again. Kevin Rupp shares the life-changing lessons he learned while watching his daughter fight for her life.

Transcript:

Our daughter had fallen ill at school and apparently she was having a seizure. She was healthy, we had no inkling of anything going on. She was rushed to the local hospital. They told her that they found a lime sized tumor on the right side of her brain. He said they were gonna do brain surgery the next morning.

And that’s when another doctor pulled us aside and said, your daughter probably won’t live till morning. And then she went in for her nine hours of brain surgery but she made it.

And we thought we were done, this was over. Until two days later and they told us, your daughter has glioblastoma multiforme, brain cancer. Fatal nearly 100% of the time within one year. Once again a doctor pulled us aside and said make memories now.

Before we knew it we were at two years past diagnosis, Felicia kept on going, it was four years. Before we knew it we were at five years past diagnosis which is a benchmark in cancer treatment and it was a celebration. She was cancer free and for five years she had kicked brain cancer’s butt. The little girl that could.

That summer of her fifth year, Felicia became ill. We thought it was the flu. So after a few weeks of dealing with this flu, we had to take her back to Hershey. And there they told us, Felicia has leukemia. So we were back at it. This was a struggle from the start. Something you don’t ever want to hear. Talk about your child in the same sentences as ventilators, feeding tubes, do not resuscitate orders.

Felicia started to lose consciousness, sometimes 24 hours a day. And one night I couldn’t sleep, and I went into the intensive care unit and I quietly sat by her bed and I looked at her sleeping, and I thought what an incredible child, how lucky I have been to be this child’s father. I told her how much we loved her, I told her how proud we were of her battle, and I said to her, if the angels are here for you, then it’s time to get going. And then she opened her eyes and she looked at me, and she said I love you daddy. That’s the last thing, she ever said to me. She took two more breaths and she died in my arms.

You hear the stories of people that have had after death experiences and they say, they float above the bed and they can look down on the scene and see what’s going on. So just in case I looked up at corner of the room and I waved, I hope she saw me.

Our daughter’s been gone for 16 years and people say to us still, isn’t it time to move on and let the past be the past? Grief is forever, it doesn’t go away, it becomes a part of you.

American novelist Anne Lamott said, hope begins in the dark, the stubborn hope that if you just show up and try to do the right thing the dawn will come, you wait and watch and work you don’t give up, all I can do is love her, love the world, emulate her by living with daring spirit and joy, grief and love are conjoined, you don’t get one without the other.

The reason we never heal is because our love never dies and maybe the reason we never heal is to keep hope alive.

This Woman Ditched a High-Powered Job to Help Save Thousands of Orphans

By | children, Food for thought, helping others, hope, Inspiring Stories, kindness

By age 30, Caroline Boudreaux had a high-paying job in TV advertising, a sleek car, a beautiful home and a sizzling social life. And yet, like so many, she felt unfulfilled and unhappy.

Deciding to focus on herself, Caroline took a sabbatical, journeying around the world with her best friend. One day, in a makeshift orphanage in a small Indian village, she found the calling she wasn’t even looking for: caring for orphaned children. And so her Miracle Foundation was born.

I felt like I was being wasted. I knew in my heart that I had a higher purpose that I wasn’t fulfilling.

Caroline had never seen orphans before. There were more than 100 children in that Indian village, taken in by just one family. The conditions were brutal: The children were malnourished and lacked proper clothing. And they lacked the necessary love and attention all children need to lead happy childhoods.

“All of them had empty-looking eyes. And they were all vying for our attention, asking for a hug from us or to touch our hands. There were so many, and every single one was precious and perfect, desperately in need of love, attention – someone to care. I knew I had to do something,” says Caroline.

We believe in a future where there’s no longer a need for orphanages. Ask any child and they will tell you that their biggest dream is to be part of a loving family.

Returning from her sabbatical, Caroline turned her back on her former career to focus on her foundation. The goals? Providing support and empowerment to orphaned children so they can reach their full potential, as well as eliminating the need for orphanages by 2040.

Collaborating with other NGOs, governments, donors, volunteers, doctors and local family-strengthening organizations, Miracle Foundation has helped thousands of orphaned and at-risk children since its inception in 2000. In fact, 25% of children have already transitioned to family environments and 98% have graduated from secondary school.

Headquartered in Austin, Miracle Foundation works to enrich the lives of vulnerable children in Indian, Africa, Sri Lanka and Mexico, as well as children in the U.S. foster care system. These children can grow and live in safe, happy and healthy environments, where their needs for attention, affection and education are met. Environments where they have a chance to a better future and breaking the cycle. And for Caroline herself, gone are the days when she felt empty: “I now have everything money can’t buy. I have this great mission and great work now. It’s given me something so powerful to do.”
